Polish Officials Accused of Selling Visas to Migrants

Polish authorities are facing allegations of profiteering from the sale of visas to migrants, as reported by the German newspaper, Bild. The country's Foreign Minister, Zbigniew Rau, along with his former deputy, Piotr Wawrzyk, who is currently hospitalized after a suicide attempt post-dismissal, are at the center of these accusations.

Investigations suggest that Rau and Wawrzyk coordinated the illicit sale of 350,000 visas to labor migrants primarily from Africa and Asia over a span of three years. Charges for each visa reached a staggering $40,000, with the proceeds allegedly being split between smugglers and government representatives. Interestingly, the migrants who secured these visas did not stay in Poland but relocated to other Schengen nations.

Despite Warsaw officials frequently expressing their reservations about EU migration policies, data reveals that Poland has outstripped even Germany and Spain in the number of work visas issued within the European Union. Presently, Polish embassies in various countries, including India, Hong Kong, and the UAE, are undergoing inspection in relation to these allegations.
